The study, conducted in 1999-2000 on a representative sample of the inhabitants of Slovenia is presented in this paper, namely the part devoted to the perception of regions. The emphasis of this paper is on the psichological experience of the space, which should also serve as a basis for planning decisions. Two members of our research group (Marušič I., Kučan A.) took an active part in this research from the very beginning to the final analysis of the material, gathered with the questionnaire on the representative sample of Slovene inhabitants.

The form of strategic spatial planning, which differes from the established methodologies in Slovene spatial planning practice is presented. GIS technology was used for data procesiing and spatial modelling, which enabled to preserve the accuracy of spatial information on strategic level. The research achievement is presented with a case-study, where the possibilities for running the proposed overhead transmission line between Okroglo near Kranj and italian border were investigated. The case-study was necessary to test whether the theoretical framework could be applied into practice.

The design, size, and organization of open spaces in residential areas of single-family houses has undergone significant change in the last forty years. A comparative analysis of selected settlements in Ljubljana, Maribor, and Novo mesto determined a reduction in open spaces, including green areas. The shortage of land and the increased use of parcels have discouraged the development of grean areas along streets and common areas intended for socializing, playing, and recreation what results in the unsuitable physical appearance of new settlements as well as in the impoverished quality of life.

When planning, we encounter the problem of defining landscape identity. Emerging from physical realities, landscape identities are no less social constructs. The research revealed that landscape identity is related to the concept of the nation: (Slovenian) national identity is bound to landscapes and to an idealized landscape type. The social conception of the national space tends towards uniformity. Some landscapes emerge as representatives of the whole, and act as symbolic places epitomizing national space. Such an image is unrealistic; it blinds us to serious problems in the environment.

The paper draws on the importance of public participation in improving aspects of the land-use planning process and regards the lack of adequate tools as an important barrier hindering effective implementation of participation in planning practice. The results have shown that the use of a questionnaire, combined with the cognitive mapping, statistical analysis and suitability modeling proved to be a valuable input into traditional participation workshops, thus fostering an interactive participative planning process, whereby conflicts could be resolved while searching for a consensual solution.
