Five companies from different Slovenian regions participated in the EU PHARE project. An approach towards achievement of the common aim, namely functional foods, by the colaboration of different subjects – from the animal feed producers, farms, meat processing industry, research institutions and representatives of information technologies was presented. New technology was introduced and technological level of individual partners was improved by the cooperation of subjects involved in the food chain. The promotion of functional foods has been carried out at Rogaška Slatina.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1963144International symposium on anaerobic microbiology (ISAM) organized by the members of programme team, was organized for the 5th time from 1998 and first time in Slovenia. The main goal of this scientific meeting is to bring together young microbiologists and give them an opportunity for oral presentation and thorough discussion with eminent researchers. During the three symposia days 46 lectures were presented by scientist coming from Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Scotland, Turkey, UK, and USA.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2069384In a dissertation, the results of the studies of wide spectrum bacteriocin complexes of two probiotic strains are presented. On the basis of nucleotide sequences of gene operons required for bacteriocin production, and analysis of leading sequence of double-glycine type, two new bacteriocins were described. In addition, a phenomenon of a crosswise homology of active and non-active subunits of bacteriocins K7 and LF221 with narrow spectrum bacteriocin gassericin T was described, which hasn't been observed before. The PhD student awarded for the work with the Krka Prize [COBISS.SI-ID 2240136].

COBISS.SI-ID: 3316600The aim of our research was to determine the effect of different preparation of sweet chestnut wood extract on in vitro gas production kinetics of soybean and sunflower meal when both were fermented in the inoculum prepared from the contents of rabbit caeca. We found out that chestnut wood extract in the form of powder increased the activity of caecal microbes, while the extract coated with the oil did not change the microbial activity. For the presentation of the research the authors received an award for the best paper in the scientific session »Nutrition and digestive physiology«.
B.03 Paper at an international scientific conference
COBISS.SI-ID: 2325640In invited lecture on »4th Meeting on Chemistry and Life« organized at University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry in Brno, the functional food was presented as a new concept of human nutrition. Functional dairy products as leading group of functional food products were taken as a case. The differences between conventional and functional food products, nutrigenomics as well as risks connected with the new concepts in nutrition were elucidated.
