In the past 5-year period our programme group has established a laboratory for culturing of embrionic stem cells and the technology for transgenic animals with the accompanying facilities for housing and breeding of laboratory transgenic animals. In the year 2007 we have also developed the first transgenic animal in Slovenia, for which the industry has already shown interest. We think that the establishment of the embrional stem cell laboratory and the technology of trangenic animals is an important socioeconomic and cultural accomplishment of our programme group.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3853338In order to coordinate research- and preservation activities related to Salmonid species in the Balkan, we initiated the formation of informal group of researchers and fresh water system managers in the area. The main interest of the group is focused toward endemic taxa with important unresolved taxonomic problems and only little information on their distribution and conservation status available. The group is active in the Balkan and joins international recognized researchers. Through our activities we got in touch with the World Trout Project, established by Patagonia, Inc.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1626248We succeeded to apply our recently discovered genetic markers related with the TFAM gene polymorphisms in the practical animal breeding. The TFAM gene polymorphisms allow identification of superior animals for beef meat production industry and support marker assisted selection (MAS) for meat quality in cattle. Two closely linked A/C and C/T SNPs were found in the bovine TFAM promoter and then genotyped on 237 Wagyu x Limousin F(2).

COBISS.SI-ID: 1925768The programme leader Prof. Dr. Peter Dovc received the prestigious national “Ziga Zois research award” in the year 2007. In the argumentation was mentioned his contribution to the field of animal genetics in Slovenia with the main accent on horse genetics, mammary gland biology and molecular genetics of avian mycoplasma species. Certainly, the award reflects successful research work of the entire group during the period of the last few years.

COBISS.SI-ID: 12221206In the frame of the EAAP meeting held in Bled in 2004, the members of the programme group organized a satellite conference “Biology of lactation in farm animals”, Bled, September 9-10, 2004. After the conference the special issue of the official EAAP journal Livestock Production Science was published where Prof. Dovc was Guest Editor. Due to the interanal reputation of the group in this field of research Prof. Dovc received the invitation for the invited lecture at the World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production in 2006 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
