COBISS.SI-ID: 25431040The focus of this special issue is the application of the methodological framework of Europeanisation and party analysis to those countries of former Yugoslavia, where political parties based on a liberal principle (parties represent citizens) more or less prevailed over those based on the ethnic principle (parties represent ethnic groups in ethnically segmented societies). Intensive electoral engineering had caused the freezing of or the postponement of transtitions to a democracy for about a decade. Apart from Slovenia, these countries have varying ‘distances’ from potential EU membership.

COBISS.SI-ID: 27533917The research results have shown that in Slovenian society and politics since 1988 transformations of values supportive of democracy are largely noticeable. Still, this transformation is colliding with a continuity of values which not only do not support the values of civic culture but are even in conflict with them. So far, Slovenian experience has shown that formal systemic transformation is possible in a relatively short period of time, while values and behaviour change relatively slowly and not automatically in relation to growth in economic welfare.
