This book critically observes contemporary concepts of literary theory, literary history, and textology, defines the inherited functions of the discipline, and seeks new goals for it – all with the purpose of bringing up to date and making sense of basic categories of professional concepts of literature. With a primarily cultural and anthropological perspective, which takes into account inter- and trans-disciplinary connections, it discusses the concepts of literature, literariness, discourse, structure, text, style, genre, fiction and non-fiction, cultural memory, and literary space.

This thematic collection deals with current theoretical and methodological issues in literary history. The international contributions have in common the point of view that historical treatment of literature is disputable today but that, even so, it is possible and relevant. Structural similarities are evident between selected central issues and perspectives. The central points are the definition of the discipline's subjects and methods because these rely on the basic concepts of literature’s historicity, as well as the comprehension opportunities afforded by the historical perspective.

This monograph deals with poetry, which was preserved in manuscript and included in collections from 17th and 18th century along with the poems from the first Slovene poetry almanac Pisanice (1779-1781) and the poetry by the so called Zois's circle from the end of 18th century. With regard to the previous research on the verse of older Slovene profane poetry, a thorough analysis of the structures and the development of over 150 different strophes (from two- to ten-line strophes) is conducted. The appendix also brings a complete repertoar of strophic forms used in this poetic corpus.

Within the period from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries, the conceptual and theoretical structure of literary studies are represented by articles on its subjects and methods, while the external reach of its existence is touched upon by articles on respective institutions and on their leading people. For institutions, the focus is on the question of what concept of the discipline they applied to their organization and staffing; for individuals, on their basic ideas about the discipline itself, as well as their contribution to its institutional fortification and social acceptance.

This book relates to scholarly works and public activity of Anton Ocvirk, the founder of comparative literature in Slovenia as academic discipline, within Slovenian and selected European contexts. The second central theme involves some basic questions about the present state, current issues, and developmental perspectives of comparative literature. The broadest common framework includes the awareness of the contemporary plural or crisis state of the discipline, the promotion of its independence in the future, and efforts to renovate it on the basis of critical self-reflection.
