In this work we present some results of investigations, dealing with the monitoring of the influence of the different kind of plaster and the quality of individual dental alloy charge on the quality of the tooth casting. The following conclusions can be summarized: the influence of the different type of plaster on quality of the tooth casting is important; with the using of different type of plaster the tooth casting have various gold colour and the size of casting cone depends on the type of plaster using for the production of the cuvette.

Testing of the new Au dental alloy included examining the initial cast, and the different heat- treated conditions of the Au alloy. The optical properties of Au-dental alloy were investigated by means of spectro-photometric colourimetry. Spectral reflectance data from the mirror-polished flat samples of initial Au dental alloy were collected under the CIE standard illuminant D65. Finally the test of cytotoxicity of new Au based dental alloys using standard in vitro assays for testing the biocompatibility.

Development of a dental alloy with high Au content is based on the ternary system of Au-Pt-Zn with a nominal composition of 86,9Au-9,9Pt-1,5Zn, and about 1,5 wt.% micro-alloying elements (In, Ir, Rh). The results analyses of different heat-treated states showed that the optimal mechanical properties and hardness of an Au-Pt-Zn alloy can be reached with combinations of heat treatment for 20 minutes at 723 K and then slowly cooling, if the alloy was annealed at 1223 K for 30 minutes and the water quenched.

The aim of this work was to compare the microstructures of two high noble experimental Au-Pt alloys with similar composition with their corrosion and biocompatibility in vitro. We showed that Au-Pt II alloy, composed of 87.3 wt.% Au, 9.9 wt.% Pt, 1.7 wt.% Zn and 0.5 wt.% Ir + Rh + In, although possessing better mechanical properties than the Au-Pt I alloy (86.9 wt.% Au, 10.4 wt.% Pt, 1.5 wt.% Zn and 0.5 wt.% Ir + Rh + In), exerted higher adverse effects on the viability of L929 cells and the suppression of rat thymocyte functions, such as proliferation activity and the production of IL-2.

Review paper describes a short overview of the history and classification of different materials used in dentistry, and represents the challenge and usage of the latest inventions in the field of dental materials, with special focus on gold-based alloys. Moreover, the future role of Au in restorative and conservative dentistry is discussed compared to alternative materials. Namely, today the science of dental materials generally encompasses some of the properties of natural oral tissues compared to the synthetic materials used for prevention and restoration in dentistry.
