The effects of certain plant extracts (garlic, cinnamon) on microorganisms from the gut of domestic animals in situ, in flow through-bioreactors and in pure and mixed microbial cultures were studied. Traditional microbiological approaches were used as well as modern molecular biology methods and the effects of plant extracts were compared to the effects of well known feed additive monensin. Several interesting phenomena were discovered.Generally higher concentration of plant extracts in comparison with monensin was needed in order to achieve similar effects.
