First place at the competition of research projects in synthetic biology at the University MIT

In the year 2008, researchers of the project group organized a student team from the University of Ljubljana to perform a research on treatment of infection with Helicobacter. The group won the “Grand Prize” award at the international competition in Synthetic biology iGEM2008. Enthusiastic response was encountered in the Slovenian and international media. Apart from the scientific result, the success in this elite competition is very important for the promotion of the quality of Slovenian science and education at the international level.

Contribution to the development of synthetic biology in the world and in Slovenia

Researchers of the project group entered the research on synthetic biology, with first participation at the international competition of research projects in synthetic biology. Synthetic biology is a young discipline, which combines engineering approaches with research on biological systems. In our research group we have up to now focused on health-related applications. Our researchers participate in several committees for the development of synthetic biology in Europe.
