Abscission is generally thought to be a form of the programmed cell death. However, this has not been proved in any case. In this study we showed that the abscission of leaves and flowers of tomato is a disconnected process, which develops in two separate domains. The first domain in the pedicel, which faces the leaf or flower includes programmed cell death and the second one, which faces the stem includes dissolving of central lamellas and simple separation of cell layers. The important observation is that cells in the second domains remain undamaged after the process.
