The paper is based on the results of research project »Linking policies and criteria for achieving the sustainable spatial development of towns and other settlements in functional urban areas«. It exposes the state analysis and tendencies in recent spatial development processes in Maribor. The main goal of the paper is to describe the most prominent processes in spatial urban development of Maribor and at the same time to highlight the discordance between the goals and objectives of spatial policies and actual urban development.

The scientific monograph contains major directions for sustainable spatial development in the area of Ljubljana. Among the environmental impacts the road traffic is exposed (use of space and air pollution), followed by the settlement (water pollution and big amounts of waste). The groundwater protection, the limitation of suburbanization processes and road traffic as well as the spatial development in the frames of environmental conditions are the major sustainable development challenges of city’s policy. The monograph represents one of the fundamental works in the issue of urban ecosystems.

Through the understanding of a city as an open ecosystem its functioning can be recognized as well as its role and impacts on various levels. If a city is recognized as ecosystem with internally connected contents, the definition of its carrying capacity is easier. With the understanding of its metabolism the causes and consequences of human activities can be explained. The paper presents the conditions and challenges to which cities will have to approach in order to achieve a higher sustainability.
