Stratigraphic evolution of northern and southwestern margins of the Early Jurassic Dinaric Carbonate Platform from Trnovski gozd (Slovenia) and Rumija (Montenegro) is presented for the first time. The Pliensbachian facies in Trnovski gozd are almost identical to the most proximal succession on Rumija, where a depositional system of a southwest-dipping carbonate ramp was demonstrated. The first order transgressive-regressive cycle with the major early Toarcian transgressive peak is clearly recognized in all sections. The studied successions are correlative to formations of the Trento Plaform.

Based on paleoecological and sedimentological studies on Paleogene shallow-water carbonates of the Kras Plateau, three facies have been recognized and summarized in a carbonate ramp model. Six foraminiferal assemblages, representing different ramp subenvironments, have been defined. By comparing the evolution of the shallow-water biota with data from the Pyrenees and Egypt, a general latitudinal trend can be recognized. However, local depositional setting seems to have been the predominant factor controlling the development and evolution of shallow-water biota.
