We have compared the reaction of juvenile and adult beech trees on elevated ozone fumigation. Beech seedlings reacts on ozone with reduction of growth in above and below-ground parts and with a shift in ectomycorrhizal community structure (ECM). The adult beech tree reacted with an increased production of fine roots, also correlated with an increased cytokinin concentration in xylem sap, and a shift in functional diversity of ECM. We conclude that ozone fumigation can influence rejuvenation of forest stands and thus have an impact on long-term sustainability of forest ecosystems.

We present the first owerviev of the results on height growth variability of the 15 European beech provenances in two comparable tests in Croatia and Slovenia. Turkey-Kramer test did not show clinal geographic pattern in differences between provenances. It could be concluded that results indicate ecotypic genetic differentiation of the studied provenances. Future studies should include also ecological variables of mother stands, necessary for describing patterns of genetic variation.
