Hormone dependent diseases often correlate with disturbed formation and action of steroid hormones. P.I. presented disturbed pre-receptor regulation of estrogen and progesterone action in endometriosis and endometrial cancer. She showed expression analysis data at the mRNA, protein and cellular levels, and proposed two separate models of estrogen metabolism and action in endometriosis and endometrial cancer. Detailed understanding of mechanisms of estrogen action in these two diseases would, in a long term, lead to a better treatment.

COBISS.SI-ID: 239654912P.I. was an invited speaker at the World Congress on Advances in Oncology and 12th International Symposium on Molecular Medicine, where she presented data on biosynthesis and oxidative metabolism of estrogens in endometrial cancer. She showed results of expression analyses at the mRNA, protein and cellular levels and introduced a model of local biosynthesis of estrogens and their oxidative metabolism in cancerous endometrial tissue. Results presented at this meeting will contribute to a better understanding of the role of estrogens as initiators and promoters of carcinogenesis.

COBISS.SI-ID: 26143193Tina Šmuc studied expression of genes of estrogen and progesterone metabolism in ovarian endometriosis and endometrial cancer. Her Ph.D. thesis included 6 manuscripts with I.F., one manuscript in a national journal, one book chapter and 2 manuscripts in preparation. Petra Brožič studied inhibitors of hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases. Her Ph. D. thesis included 8 manuscripts with I.F., one manuscript in national journal and one book chapter. Both Ph.D. theses were awarded with Krka prize in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
