Article is one in the series, dealing with qualitative and comparative aspects of subterranean biodiversity in Dinarides. Beetles are a model group for subterranean terrestrial fauna and the most threatened. For the first time we have shown they have two areas of high species richness. Highest positive autocorrelation among numbers of species was at the unit 20x20 km. Using five estimators, 22-80% increase in number of species can be expected, yet patterns cannot be explained by differences in sampling effort only. Knowing the patterns of biodiversity is urgent in planning its conservation.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1813071This is a proposal of research priorities for planning of networks for protection of subterranean aquatic biodiversity. Important is the whole aquifer and socio-economic topics are considered. Selection has to be in a continental scale, it should include the highest possible number of species. To protect all stygobiotic species one should protect 46% of the quadrats where hypogean habitats are present; with 10% of the territory, 74% of all species and 59% of endemics would be protected. Of 6 countries, Slovenia has the highest density of areas with a high density of stygobiotic species.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1967695Some subterranean aquatic habitats are – because of a hydrographical partition – characterized by a high endemism. With the help of DNA analyses we checked unexpectedly large areas of some species. They mostly appeared to be in fact aggregates of morphologically very similar ('cryptic') species; some of them are even known from single localities. Small distribution ranges are in stygobiotic species a rule, adimaeter of over 200 km is an exception. This makes conservation measures for biodiversity even more complicated.
