The Niphargus webpage contains data on the morphology of individual species, photographs of taxonomically important characters, and a species database together with a list of type localities. The incorporated DELTA database is organized as to generate species descriptions with ease. The online-database and its applications for taxonomists have been published in the journal Zootaxa (Fišer et al. 2009a, b).

The highly euryoecious species Asellus aquaticus Linne (Crustacea: Isopoda) is distributed almost throughout entire Europe and SW Asia. It is ecologically and biogeographically important. Because there was no designated type specimen (holotype) we selected a neotype from Sweden and described it in detail. Type specimens are the standard of taxa. AT the same time we examined the variability across Europe and discovered that the morphological differentiation does not match the molecular one.
