HMG-CoA reductase is a key enzyme in the sterol metabolism and also in the regulation of the membrane composition and fluidity. Its activity is regulated by environmental salinity and is essential for the halotolerance in the studied extremely halotolerant black yeast Hortaea werneckii and halophilic Wallemia ichthyophaga.

We published a scientific article with a description of the mechanisms for haloadaptation in extremely halotolerant black yeast H. werneckii. We described accumulation of glycerol and other polyols at increased salinity. Furthermore, we propose a role of melanization in the retention of intracellular glycerol. Similar mechanisms of osmoadaptation are studied in the fungi of the genus Wallemia.
