The book is a detailed commentary to the essay Illyrian History, written by a Greek historian of the 2nd century AD, Appian of Alexandria. It is an abridged, rewritten and up-to-date version of the English edition (Appian and Illyricum, 2005), dealing with important chapters from the ancient history of the eastern Alpine and Adriatic regions (including Slovenia), as well as the western Balkans. Illyricum equals more or less the western Balkans, and its history has always been complex and problematic. The monograph offers an updated survey of the history of Illyricum.

Urbanization is an important feature of ‘Romanization’, which is closely related to the creation of a province. Five important Celtic oppida became Roman municipia Claudia under Claudius: Celeia, Virunum, Teurnia, Aguntum, and Iuvavum. The important administrative changes occurred with the probable foundation of the procuratorial province of Noricum. The earliest Pannonian Roman colony was Savaria, founded under Claudius, which had formerly belonged to the Norican kingdom. Urbanization was initiated by the emperor Vespasian, since Pannonia was conquered a generation later than Noricum.

The archaeological sites that were discovered and excavated during the highway construction in 1989 are published and analysed in the book: the Bronze Age sites and the early Roman sites. The Razdrto pass, named Ocra in the Roman era, was crossed by an important long distance route that connected Italy with the central Danubian area. The complex process of Romanisation in the western and central Slovenia and the Roman roads across the Eastern Alps have been presented in the conclusive study, as well as the importance of the archaeological sites of Razdrto. Emona as a colonia Iulia was most probably founded by Octavian after Actium. From the very beginning the town must have belonged to Italy, as is indicated by the boundary stone between Aquileia and Emona. Nauportus was an important Aquileian emporium, and close contacts between Aquileia and Emona are documented from the later Republican period onwards. A world of gods at Emona is an interesting blend of various cults, as that of Carna, an old Italic divinity of hinges. The main divinity of the Emona area was from the 1st century BC on Aecorna.

A vicus of Nauportus held a key position at the junction between land routes leading from northeastern Italy and Istria and a river route leading eastwards to Pannonia. The settlement of the Augustan period was fortified with a defence wall and towers as well as a defence ditch. Large storehouses were constructed in rows around the central market place. It is clearly manifested in the architecture, that the settlement was a trade, traffic, storage and reloading post, as well as a river port.
