Revival of paid domestic and care workers in middle class families : the case of Slovenia.

The author assesses Slovenia's position in the “global care chain” and finds that “local care chains” prevail in the field of childcare and elder care, while a co-occurrence of female gender, “other”« ethnicity and poverty is typical in the field of household cleaning. If the the “global care chain” concept stresses the “transnational political economy of care”, the “local care chains” make visible the dependence of care provision on local inequalities.

Contribution of Živa Humer in this scientific monography is the outcome of the analysis of the care and gender regime in Slovenia and of the influences of the specific social politics' measure, i.e. the introduction of paternity leave, on sharing domestic work between men and women in private sphere and on work/life balance.

Ethics of care, gender and family: the processes of the relocation of care between private and public spheres

The central focus are the processes of relocation of care practices within family life (as) between genders and within private and public spheres, with a strong emphasis on childcare and domestic work. Trends of the relocation of care and care work between women and men are more significant on the level of values, beliefs and social expectations; changes are more significant in the emotional aspect of parenting. The relocation of care and care work is most intense between women in the context of grandparenting and commodification of domestic and care work.

Global and local care chains in Slovenia

Slovenian context is specific in revival of informal paid care work. Despite the recent neoliberal impacts on social policy it preserved extensive and affordable network of subsidized quality kindergartens, one year long, 100% paid maternity and parental leaves and well developed public system of elderly care. Care receivers do not get cash for care allowances (yet). Besides, there is a very modest feminization of migration. And still, Slovenia is experiencing a steep growth in informal paid care work.
