Fundamentals and methods od earthquake resistant design of masonry buildings are discussed. Methods of calculations are supported by experimental evidence. An important part of the book is dedicated to repair and retrofit of existing, including cultural heritage buildings.

Heritage masonry buildings and reduction of seismic risk : the case of Slovenia.

Based on the correlation between the observed damage and limit states, the values of parameters needed for the assessment of seismic resistance have been proposed, which take into consideration damage limitation requirements. Practically the same level of seismic resistance can be ensured as in the case of the new construction.

Displacement capacity of masonry buildings as a basis for the assessment of behavior factor : an experimental study.

The results of shaking table tests of a series of 1:5 scale masonry building models have been used for the assessment of values of structural behavior factor q for masonry structures. On the basis of analysis of experimental resultsa conclusion can be made, that the values at the upper limit of the proposed range of values of structural behavior factor q for unreinforced and confined masonry construction systems are adequate. If pushover methods are used for the analysis, displacement capacity demand needs to be verified.

Seismic upgrading of old masonry buildings by seismic isolation and CFRP laminates : a shaking-table study of reduced scale models

The efficiency of improving the seismic resistance of old masonry buildings bymeans of seismic isolation and confining the structure with CFRP laminate strips has been investigated. Tests have shown that isolators alone did not prevent the separation of the walls. However, models confined with CFRP strips exhibited significantly improved seismic behavior.

Shear resistance of masonry walls and Eurocode 6 : shear versus tensile strength of masonry.

The results of a series of laboratory tests are analysed to show the difference in calculation of the shear resistance of masonry walls. The results of Eurocode 6 friction shear based calculations and tensile strength methods have been compared. The calculations, based on the assumption of friction shear mechanism, are far from experimental values.
