The paper deals with dependency of variations in the rotor design on the synchronous, asynchronous and on-line starting characteristics of a three phase synchronous-reluctance motor (SRM). Analytical geometry-dependant equations for the d- and q-axis SRM inductances are derived. To investigate the asynchronous run and on-line starting characteristics, a finite-element model connected with an external electric supply circuit was built up. To increase the SRM synchronous torque production capability, a control algorithm is proposed.
