Primož Ziherl served as a member of the international organizing committee of the conference Physics of Cells: From Living to Soft Matter (Hyeres, France, 2.-8. 9. 2012), he was also one of the directors of the Summer School Physics of Complex Colloids (International School of Physics Enrico Fermi, Varenna, Italy, 3.-13. 7. 2012), and organized a workshop entitled "Mechanics of Tissues" (Ljubljana, Slovenia, 28.-29. 10. 2012). In addition, members of the program gave a total of 17 invited talks and more than 40 other contributions at international scientific meetings, and 12 talks at foreign universities.
B.01 Organiser of a scientific meeting
Members of the program are actively involved in teaching and administrative positions at three national universities: in Ljubljana, Maribor and Nova Gorica. Nataša Vaupotič is the dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at University of Maribor and Gvido Bratina is the dean of the School of Applied Sciences at University of Nova Gorica. In 2012, members of the program taught more than 60 undergraduate and graduate courses, and supervised or cosupervised 3 PhD theses, 1 master thesis and 19 undergraduate theses. Mojca Čepič leads a project for the introduction of current research interdisciplinary topic into education.
D.10 Educational activities
Members of the program serve on editorial boards of several international scientific journals (Rudolf Podgornik is coeditor in chief of J. Biol. Phys., and Primož Ziherl was a guest editor for a special issue of Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst ; Milan Brumen, Mojca Čepič, Marko Marhl, Rudolf Podgornik, Jure Dobnikar and Primož Ziherl are members of editorial boards of ISRN Biomathematics, Eur. J. Phys., Biosystems, PMC Biophysics, Science Jet, and Phys. Rev. E, respectively) and national journals (Marko Marhl, Mojca Čepič and Milan Brumen are members of editorial boards of Fizika v šoli, Presek and Proteus, respectively). In addition, we review manuscripts for many prominent international journals; in 2012 we peerreviewed more than 110 manuscripts. Mojca Čepič serves as an external referee for Marie Curie mobility (EU) and the National Science Foundation (USA), Nataša Vaupotič for the National Science Centre (Poland), and Rudolf Podgornik for the European Research Council.
C.04 Editorial board of an international magazine
Members of the program are involved in various activities aimed at popularization of science. In 2012 we actively contributed to the annual event "Researchers' Night" in Maribor, and co-authored a number of professional and pop-science works aimed at the general public. Aleš Fajmut and Nataša Vaupotič organized a series of seminars and workshops on environmental physics for high school teachers and students.
F.18 Transfer of new know-how to direct users (seminars, fora, conferences)
Our research of intermolecular interactions, relevant for industrial production of biologics, is performed in collaboration with Lek Pharmaceuticals, d.d. In 2012 we successfully completed a Lek-sponsored research project on optical analysis of protein aggregates in a microfluidic diffusion chamber, and co-authored a paper on intermolecular interactions. Institute of Biophysics at University of Ljubljana collaborates with a high-technology company Aresis d.o.o. on the development of applications of their optical tweezers in life sciences.
