P1-0104 — Annual report 2009
1.
Successful heading an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional research group

P1-0104 “Functional Genomics and Biotechnology for Health” is an interinstitutional and interdisciplinary group, harbouring research groups from Faculty of Medicine UL (Medical Centre for Molecular Biology, MCMB) and National Institute of Chemistry (L11 – Biosynthesis and Biotransformation). According to bibliographic research performance indicators (categorization methodology ARRS – Science) in 2009 again the group was ranked among top groups on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

End of the Centre of Excellence "Biotechnology with Pharmacy" (CoE BP) and establishment of the new CoE BioMedPharm

Virtual Centre of Excellence Biotechnology with Pharmacy (CoE BP) in 2008 celebrated the end of first period of his activity, co-financed by European Structural Funds for Regional Development (ESRD). In 2009 it was upgraded with new R&D program and establishment of consortium for the new CoE BioMedPharm networking 27 partners from University, public research institutes, clinical institutions, S&M enterprises and pharmaceutical industry. In contrast to the absence of co-financement from MHEST, research in the partnership is going on.

3.
Three international patents in 2009.

International patents resulting from research collaboration between the Laboratoriy for Biosynthesis and Biotransformation (L11) at the National Institute of Chemistry, and pharmaceutical company Lek d.d., a Sandoz member, are proofs of active contribution of the programme group to the progress of Slovenian pharmaceutical industry taking part in the modern production of advanced biological drugs.

Prof. dr. Damian Rozman: Zois Award for significant achievements in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology

Internationally sound research of Prof. Dr. Damjana Rozman contributed on understanding regulation of steroid metabolism, especially of cholesterol and some steroid hormones. She is involved in a number of international projects, some of them also coordinated by her. She has also greatly contributed to the development of new post-genomic methods, especially by introducing DNA chip technology followed by production of original DNA chip for studying cholesterol metabolism. For years she was working with pharmaceutical industry on the development of drugs for control of cholesterol metabolism.
