In the framework of the new global mercury convention (Minamata Convention) the Department of Environmental Sciences has for the first time quantitatively assess the contribution of contaminated sites to the global mercury budget. The information was very important and affected inclusion of contaminated sites in the context of characterization, identification, remediation and risk assessment. A series of topics related to this issues are included in a special issues of Environmental Research, Vol. 125 (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/00139351/125), that was guest edited by the Department.
