Rapid fractionation of Al in human serum by the use of HiTrap desalting size exclusion column with ICP-MS detection.

To understand the pathways of Al transport in human body it is necessary to identify and quantify Al species present in human serum. In studies of the efficiencies of the chelation therapies and to perform kinetic studies of Al binding to Tf, rapid and reliable analytical procedures are required. Therefore, a new analytical procedure for the efficient, reliable and fast separation of proteins from LMM compounds in serum was developed by the use of a HiTrap desalting size exclusion column.

Mercury, selenium, PCBs and fatty acids in fresh and canned fish available on the Slovenian market.

In order to contribute to the general understanding of the risks and benefits of consuming fish and fish products, total mercury (THg), monomethylmercury (MeHg), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), selenium (Se), n-3 and n-6 fatty acids were determined in fresh and canned fish on the Slovenian market. Based on the frequency of fish consumption and levels of MeHg, THg and PCBs determined in the present study, it can be concluded that fish available on the Slovenian market do not represent a health risk.

Tools for evaluating selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor residues as environmental contaminants.

Psychoactive drugs are a group of pharmaceuticals that are being dispensed in increasing quantities due to a developing health care system, demographic changes, increasing awareness of mental health issues and in response to the psychological stresses caused by modern life, which can result in various forms of psychiatric disorders. This article highlights the state of the art in analytical tools for determining the environmental occurrence, the fate and the transformation of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) residues.

Fractionation natural radionuclides in soils from the vicinity of a former uranium mine Žirovski vrh, Slovenia.

As a result of former uranium mining and milling activities at Žirovski vrh, Slovenia, 0.6 million tons of uranium mill tailings (UMT) were deposited onto a nearby waste pile Boršt. Therefore, sequential extraction protocol was performed to assess mobility and bioavailability of 238U, 234U, 230Th and 226Ra in soils from the waste pile and its surrounding. Considering activity concentrations in the UMT, 238U and 234U are the most mobile. Mobility of 226Ra is suppressed by high sulphate concentrations and is similar to mobility of 230Th.

Stability of Se species in plant extracts rich in phenolic substances.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the most common phenolic substances in plant parts, namely tannin and the flavonoid rutin, on the concentration and/or transformation of several Se species (SeMet, SeCys2, SeMeSeCys, Se(VI) and Se(IV)) during sample preparation and storage. Moreover, the effect observed was then studied in a real sample, buckwheat. These results indicate that reactions in the extraction process and during storage may affect Se speciation and may result in misidentifications and inaccurate values.
