Lynx is one of three large carnivores in Slovenia and a key species of forest ecosystems. For two decades, its decline has troubled wildlife managers and authorities. The exact reasons for the decline were not clear, but guesses included, apart from habitat changes, inbreeding depression. Our genetic investigations of the entire Dinaric lynx population revealed that genetic diversity was indeed alarmingly low and inbreeding coefficients too high for the population to maintain its viability. Our results showed that the measures to increase genetic diversity are crucial, either by introduction of new individuals or opening of migration corridors to other populations.

We organized the International Wolf Conference, which was held between 25th and 27th September 2013 in Postojna, Slovenia, at which attended 188 researchers, experts and managers from 22 countries. The presence of wolves in human-dominated landscapes of Europe is a result of complex interactions among many environmental and social factors. With ever increasing human pressure on the environment, the challenge of effective conservation of wolves can only be met through understanding of how interactions of different factors in these landscapes either allow or limit occurrence and persistence of this species. By sharing knowledge and experiences, we can considerably increase effectiveness of wolf conservation, improve cooperation, and promote transition from country-based management towards management at the level of populations. The target audience of the conference are wolf researchers, experts and managers, as well as students with interests in wildlife management and conservation. The confrence was dealing with major wolf conservation topics wolf sociobiology and ecology, population monitoring, genetics and molecular ecology, conflict mitigation and resolution, and wolves and human attitudes.
