Contamination of soils and crops with heavy metals is widespread and induces a long-term risk to ecosystem health. This research focuses on the heavy metal contamination of the paddy soils and crops from Kočani Field (Republic of Macedonia) originating from irrigation of the paddy fields by riverine water impacted by past and present base-metal mining activities and acid mine drainage.

COBISS.SI-ID: 24021287This preliminary research focuses on the mineralogical characteristics and heavy metal contents of the tailings material deposited close to Pb-Zn Sasa Mine in the Osogovo Mountains (eastern Macedonia). The mineral composition of Sasa Mine tailing material is mostly represented by quartz, pyrite, galena, sphalerite and magnetite. The calculated pollution index of tailings material was higher 15, indicating that tailings material from Sasa Mine represents a high environmental risk for surrounding ecosystems.
