A non-invasive method that can be used to quantify distribution of gelatinous organisms has been developed. System is composed of underwater camera and rotational laser fixed to the bottom of camera. Rotation laser light passes through transparent part of underwater housing and illuminates surrounding environment with a narrow green laser beam. Due to rotation of the beam a plane of green light perpendicular to the UW camera is formed. As an object passes through the plane, UW camera registers it as light flesh; number of flashes is equal to number of objects passing through light plane.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2317903An updated checklist is presented for the marine fish fauna in the Adriatic Sea. According to historical and recent sources in scientific literature 440 fish species were up to date recorded in the Adriatic Sea. Only a minor number of species are considered to be a consequence of recent processes known to have occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, such as Lessepsian migration, Atlantic influx, northward spreading and cases of escape from mariculture. The high number of recorded fish species is another evidence pointing out the rich biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea.

COBISS.SI-ID: 5792514The Water Framework Directive obliges EU Member States to achieve Good status of waters by 2015. For coastal waters we developed a classification system to assess the Ecological Status of three biological elements: phytoplankton, macroalgae and benthic invertebrates of soft bottom. In addition, we developed some methodologies for supporting hydromorphological and physico-chemical elements. Finally, we successfully and actively participated in intercalibration groups for the Mediterranean Sea.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2165583A negative trend in concentrations of Chlorophyll a, used as the proxy for phytoplankton biomass, has been observed all over the northern Adriatic during the last 10 years in comparison to the previous 20-year period. This trend is more distinctive in certain areas being -0.09 µg Chl a /L/y in the Gulf of Trieste. On contrary there has been an increase of phytoplankton abundance due to small flagellates and the reduction of massive diatom blooms in the same period.
