We prepared expert basis for the initial assessment of the environmental status of the sea, with the elements listed in Tables 1 and 2 of Annex III of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Article 8). All Member States must report it in 2012. Our scientific work was therefore related to the needs of the implementation of this important directive. To assess the status of the sea, we tested methods that were proposed at the Mediterranean level, we upgraded the ones that were not appropriate for our environment. We continued with the development of methodology for those biological elements where there was nothing developed yet. With our results we have contributed to the understanding of processes and changes in the Slovenian sea, which is very important to anticipate the negative consequences and timely action.
F.23 Development of new system-wide, normative and programme solutions, and methods
COBISS.SI-ID: 2486095The subject of the patent is a method improvement of one of the currently most widely used methods for nucleic acid quantification, the real-time PCR (rt-PCR). The new approach is an improved collection of fluorescent light coming from the sample during the rt-PCR reaction due to the presence of a transparent layer between the detector and the sample tested. The mew approach improves sensitivity, accuracy and resolution of the rt-PCR method. The novelty has an enormous potential for commercialization and development of new molecular biology tools and ensures the acquisition of higher quality data in different fields of biology, where rt-PCR is the method of choice.
F.33 Slovenian patent
COBISS.SI-ID: 27382233Programe group members are active in outreach activities and in raising public awareness giving public lectures, preparing contributions for media, organising visits at Marine Biology Station (in 2011 more than 630 visitors). The topic of 2011 World Oceans Day (8 June, proclamated by General Assembly of United Nations in 2009), was ‘Youth - the Next Wave of Change’. Activities to celebrate this day included workshops for youth (Life under the microscope, Diversity of marine organisms, Preparation for a dive, Work on the research vessel, Exciting chemistry, Photography workshop) and preparation of DVD ‘A child and the sea‘ which could be viewed also on Vimeo and Youtube. For these avtivities we were awarded Prometheus of Science for excellence in promoting science.
