Within the framework of the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in the year 2012 we prepared three extensive final reports: the report for the initial assessment of the status of the Slovenian sea (under Article 8 of the MSFD), the report for the determination of Good Environmental Status (under Article 9 of the MSFD), and the report for Environmental targets (under Article 10 of the MSFD). Moreover, we actively participated in the preparation of materials for the public, we participated to international meetings and we prepared a preliminary report for the selection of indicators to establish a monitoring program (under Article 11 of the MSFD).

COBISS.SI-ID: 2701391In cooperation with Ghent University we organised a summer school for the students of Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC). Altogether 43 students studying at 6 European universities (Ghent University (Belgium), University of Bremen (Germany), University of the Algarve (Portugal), University Pierre et Marie Curie – Paris (France), University of Oviedo (Spain), University of Klaipeida (Lithuania)) attended a 10 days summer school at the Piran Marine Biology Station, NIB. Several research topics were proposed by the program group researchers from biodiversity to pollution of coastal waters. Apart from the MBS researchers also employees from the Institute of Fisheries, the Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia, the Nature park Strunjan, the fish farm Fonda and the Port of Koper were cooperating with the students for the specific research. Students prepared the project proposal, sampled in the field, sorted, identified or analysed the material in the laboratory, and statistically evaluated the results. Finally, they wrote the report which was presented to wider public on 20 July in the MBS lecture hall.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2738511Sečovlje Salina represent an exceptional locality in the Slovenian and Mediterranean area known for immense biodiversity (ornitofauna, halophytes, rare & endangered species, outstanding diversity of habitat types) and important natural and cultural heritage including the natural salt production in the traditional manner. Therefore, the first international meeting “Sečovlje Salina as a scientific and educational basin” was held in October 2012 in the multimedia hall in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. It was hosted by the Marine biology station Piran (National Institute of Biology) in collaboration with the company SOLINE Pridelava soli d.o.o. and Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, with the financial support by Slovenian Research Agency and Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO.

COBISS.SI-ID: 263547392The subject of the innovation is a new method for efficient DNA extraction from microorganisms present in food products, without the need for previous culturing of microorganisms on enrichment or selection growth media. The method enables DNA isolation from samples with complex matrix that is present in food products. The method is interesting for DNA isolation from samples of different types, where complex matrix hinders isolation efficiency. The method has a high yield of DNA isolation and is appropriate for DNA isolation from samples with very low level of contamination. The described approach is fast and enables the use of isolated DNA in further detection methods like classical PCR or real-time PCR.
