The Article 11 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) states that on the basis of the initial assessment Member States shall prepare a monitoring programme for the assessment of the status of their marine waters, on the basis of the indicative lists of elements set out in Annexes III and V, and by reference to the environmental targets established pursuant to Article 10. In this report we have prepared a proposal for a monitoring programme for ongoing assessment of the Environmental Status, which includes a selection of indices/metrics for the evaluation of the status for those elements for which the development of methodologies is already completed. For all the proposed elements and methodologies a further coordination at the level of regions or subregions will be needed.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3005007Interactions among marine microbes and organic matter pool affect carbon cycling and consequently the biogeochemical state of the ocean and global climate. These interactions are only beginning to be understood and therefore need to be further addressed in order to better understand and predict the marine ecosystem response to natural and antropogenic perturbations. In the phosphorus (P) limited marine ecosystem bacteria may play an important role in the formation of aggregates by fast re-mineralization of P in organic particles, which enables higher carbon fixation. In order to better understand the microbial processes during these events we would like to explore who are the main players and to investigate the interactions among them and the organic matter pool at microscale level.
