Very Low Frequency (VLF( 30 kHz), amplitude and phase perturbations are related to the space based recordings of Solar X-ray irradiance (0.1-0.8 nm). A physics-based model N(t) for the reconstruction of the D-region electron density enhancements, caused by Solar flares has been developed. To validate the new algorithm, the traditional Long Wave Propagation Capability programme, giving the height dependence N(z), at a given instant, has been used. The predictions of the two models are found to compare favourably, suggesting the way towards the unified N(t,z) description.

Polycrystalline Fe-2%Si alloy was chosen as a model system for studying sputter induced topography modulations since each grain, behaves as a single-crystal surface that sputters independently of the surrounding grains. Thus, many different crystallographic orientations are included in the same experimental run. Samples of FeSi alloy with added Se as surface active element were subjected to Ar+ ion beam. The samples were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The surface exhibits facet-like formations with steep and smooth edges.

COBISS.SI-ID: 746410Electrical steel (Fe-Si-Al alloy) surfaces were subjected to Ar+ ion beam irradiation at 10 keV beam energy and off-normal sputtering conditions. The resulting morphologies are grain-orientation-dependent, and can be divided into four classes: ripples oriented parallel to the ion beam direction, ripples oriented perpendicular to ion beam direction, smooth surfaces and rough faceted surfaces. The grain orientation was correlated to the pattern formed with electron backscatter diffraction technique.
