On 24th November 2011, Prof. Dr. Albin Pintar received a national Zois award for significant scientific achievements in chemical engineering.
E.01 National awards
National Institute of Chemistry is holder of the national standard in environmental area – water samples. We assure traceability of results to primary level, perform research activities and education for endusers.
F.01 Acquisition of new practical knowledge, information and skills
COBISS.SI-ID: 4877850The interlaboratory comparisons in which fifty laboratories from Slovenia and neighbouring countries took part in each study, especially with the annual meeting, the new metrological knowledge is spread to participants. The results of the first collaborative field trial on wastewater sampling performed in Slovenia in 2012, in which seventeen sampling teams participated, demonstrate that sufficient temporal stability of wastewater was ensured during the sampling as a result of preceeding annual measurements of pollution on candidate sampling sites.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4526618In 2012, we acquired a patent for a compact system for the treatment of sanitary wastewater and its reuse (inventors: A. Pintar, J. Vrtovšek, M. Cotman). The system operates by a combination of a biological process for removing organic substances and UV treatment of the water to control the concentration of microorganisms. The use of this system is also available in smaller housing units; its implementation enables to save up to 33 % of the daily consumption of drinking water. A patent describing this invention was issued on 28th September 2012 by the Slovenian Office for Intellectual Property (Patent No.: 23669).
