This paper focuses on an investigation of the relationship between the hydraulic conductivity of clays and their plasticity. The results of laboratory tests showed that the hydraulic conductivity of a clay at a selected void ratio could be adequately determined when the external surface area of the clay grains was considered. The finding that there exists an exactly defined relationship between the Atterberg limits of clays and their external specific surfaces helped us to express the hydraulic conductivity in terms of the void ratio and the plasticity value (Atterberg limits).

A modified method is proposed for designing cantilever retaining wall with spaced piles. The results of the proposed method indicate that the pile-to-pile spacing, depending on the input soil parameters, strongly influences the three-dimensional failure mechanism’s shape and the passive pressure along the embedment depth. Distribution of the passive earth pressure is no longer rectilinear but, the earth pressure contributing on the dredged side of the embedment depth is reduced, which leads to longer piles and higher inner forces in the retaining structure.

This paper presents the results of the 5th FP project AISUWRS (Assessing and Improving the Sustainability of Urban Water Resources and Systems). The linked process models offer the prospect of better quantification of urban water balance and contaminant loads, including improved estimates of total recharge and its components. This paper describes the application and results of the urban water model chain for a city Use of sustainable urban development systems like on-site infiltration of roof runoff and improved sewer control and standards could result in better groundwater quality.

During the mining operations at the Velenje coal mine, groundwater has been presenting a constant threat to underground works. That led to the selection of the finite-element method (FEM) for the prediction of the groundwater drawdown and the water pumping rates in the areas were the underground works will encounter the risk of a water inrush. Based on the FEM prediction the sizing and the layout pattern of the “drive-in” filters were made.

a quick report about the earthquake’s location is expected. Such reports are usually performed automatically, where the identification of the seismic-phase arrival of the various seismic waves on the seismogram is the most important task. An algorithm for the automatic picking of the S wave arrival from three-component seismic data has been developed. Such a so-called S-phase picker is used to automatically analyze the data from local earthquakes in Slovenia's seismic network.
