Power Scaling of a Q-switched laser designed for internal frequency conversion is demonstrated by combining two Nd:YVO4-gain-channels with a time-multiplexing scheme based on a single crystal photo elastic modulator (SCPEM). Both channels are coupled with a polarizer and share an output-coupler and acousto-optic modulator (AOM). In order to combine two channels by time multiplexing, the single crystal photo elastic modulator is used which switches between two channels, while the acousto-optic modulator conducts the Q-switching. This allows almost to double the average output power and repetition rate within a given laser resonator design.

The presence and amount of residual stresses is very important in dynamically loaded automotive machine parts. In this investigation, the residual stresses after laser surface remelting were measured as a function of the modified layer depth on flat specimens from nodular cast iron. The results of the measured residual stresses confirm that the stresses strongly depend on the presence and quantity of the microstructure constituents in the surface remelted layer. Residual stresses have a characteristic profile in the modified surface layer. In the surface remelted layer, tensile residual stresses were found in a range between +70 and +200 MPa. The change from tensile into compressive residual stresses takes place in the lower part of the remelted layer. Maximum compressive residual stress values were found in the middle of the hardened layer in a range between -25 and -80 MPa.

Complexity has been identified as a ubiquitous and ever increasing property of manufacturing systems. Conventional theories of management lack the tools to describe, analyzse, and manage complexity, and can, in turn, no longer cope with the issues it gives rise to. New approaches are offered by complexity science, namely by computational mechanics. In the paper, a method for complexity assessment is proposed and illustrated on real industrial data. The results of the presented case study suggest a distinct relationship between complexity and throughput, and indicate that the tool used has a major impact on complexity.
