Prof. Maja Cemazar was a supervisor of PhD thesis of young research fellow Bostjan Markelc. In 2013, Bostjan Markelc successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled The effect of electroporation and electrochemotherapy on normal and tumor vasculature in mice, and was received Krka’s award. Prof. Gregor Sersa was a supervisor of PhD thesis of young research fellow Ales Sedlar. In 2013, Ales Sedlar successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled Antitumor effect of electrogene therapy with interleukin 12 in combination with radiation or electrochemotherapy on murine tumors. Prof. Andrej Coer was a supervisor of PhD thesis of young research fellow Mitja Rak. In 2013, Mitja Rak successfully defended his thesis entitled Evaluation of methods for prosthetic joint infection diagnostics. Within the program, 7 young research fellows are doing their research for doctoral thesis.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1472379The researchers involved in the project participated as interviewees in popular scientific shows aimed at popularization of science broadcasted on TV Slovenia. The theme of the show Ugriznimo znanost was Novel treatments for animals (participating researchers: prof. Gregor Sersa, prof. Snoj, prof. Maja Cemazar and prof. Natasa Tozon) (COBISS.SI-ID 1410683). The topic of discussion of the show Dobra ura z Andrejem was Genetics, human genome (COBISS.SI-ID 1487227).

COBISS.SI-ID: 1410683Prof. Maja Cemazar held a lecture at the Institut de Pharmacologie et de Biologie Structural, Universite de Toulouse. She presented novel findings on electrotransfer of single-stranded or double-stranded DNA. In multiple preclinical studies, a reduction in tumor growth, increased survival or complete tumor regression have been observed in control groups in which vector or backbone plasmid DNA electrotransfer was performed. This study demonstrated that the observed antitumor effects are not due to a single factor, but to a combination of factors.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1670011Prof. Gregor Sersa in prof. Maja Cemazar were co-organizer of the 7th conference on experimental and translational oncology and editors of Book of abstracts of the 7th Conference on experimental and translational oncology. The conference brings together Slovenian scientists working in this field. The conference is also attended by a large number of foreign lecturers.

COBISS.SI-ID: 266440192The researchers involved in the project are also actively collaborating with the industry. One of the collaborating companies is BETA tech, which is one of the leading developers and manufacturers of electroporators in the world. Researchers from the Department of experimental oncology are involved as expert advisers in the development and manufacture of the electrodes and also in practical testing of their electroporators in in vitro and in vivo experiments for the use in electrogene and electrochemotherapy. The results of these testing are published in scientific publications and are also cited as a reference confirming the quality of their products. The next company is Cobra Biologics. Cobra:Bio provides a comprehensive biologics and pharmaceuticals services and is one of the few companies offering the production of plasmid DNA at the GMP level prerequisite for the clinical studies. In the last year and a half the Department is involved in the evaluation of Cobra:bio’s technologies for the preparation of the antibiotic marker free plasmids with the objective to increase the safety of plasmid vectors for the potential use in clinical setting. The data on the Cobra:bio’s technologies is confidential, therefore the result of the evaluation are not published yet.
