Symposium topic on tumor pathology was devoted to early discovery, diagnostics, treatment and predictive factors of precursor lesions and tumours of the head and neck, urinary bladder, gastrointestinal stromal tumours, melanocytic changes and tumours of soft tissues of skin. The topic of viruses and viral diseases included interdisciplinary approach to basic medicine and clinical practice in infections with HIV, poliomaviruses, hantaviruses and hepatitis viruses. The symposium proceedings will be used for undergraduate and postgraduate education on this field of biomedicine.

COBISS.SI-ID: 253510400The invited lecturer presented a clinical picture and histopathologic changes in Fabry disease, caused by mutation of gene, encoding for enzyme alpha-galactosidase A, and consequent intracellular storage of undegradated sphingolipids in different organs. Similar ultrastructural cytoplasmic lysosomal inclusions in kidney and some other organs may be found in iatrogenic drug-induced lipidosis, particularly in association with chloroquine treatment.

COBISS.SI-ID: 27161049The Ljubljana classification has been used for more than a quarter of a century and has been found to be more precise for daily diagnostic work than other grading systems. Long-term follow-up of patients showed that malignant alterations are very rare in patients with so- called benign lesions, i.e. squamous hyperplasia and basal-parabasal hyperplasia, while among patients with atypical hyperplasia malignant alteration ocurred in nearly 10%. These results justify the importance of the Ljubljana classification and selected histomorphologic criteria.
