Laryngeal SILs remain one of the most controversial topics in laryngeal pathology. There is no general agreement about terminology, histological classification and treatment. To move towards a classification that promotes effective communication between pathologists and surgeons, and allows meaningful comparison of the results of treatment, we have proposed a modified, three grade, histological classification into low-grade SILs, high-grade SILs and carcinoma in situ. This classification is based on the morphological criteria of the Ljubljana classification, supported by evidence of differences in the behavior of these diseases in a large prospective study.
