The purpose of the study was to perform a national review of negative, low-grade and inadequate smears in women with invasive cervical cancer after the first 3 years of the screening programme. Among 162 new cervical cancer cases there were 68 (42 %) with at least one previous negative, low-grade, atypical or inadequate smear 1-40 months before diagnosis. Women with previous cytology (with or without recent high-grade smears) were more likely to have stage I cancers than those without cytology (P(0.0001). The expert group upgraded 17/33 smears in the patients with squamous carcinomas, which was more than in those with adeno- and adenosquamous carcinomas (5/24, P(0.05). As expected, a higher proportion of smears preceding adenocarcinomas were true negative.

COBISS.SI-ID: 478627Prior to the beginning of treatment, 114 patients with B-cell lymphoma treated with rituximab and chemotherapy had CD20 expression assessed by quantitative flow cytometric measurements. Our data show that patients who achieved complete response after rituximab therapy had a significantly higher expression of the CD20 antigen than those whose disease only stabilized after rituximab therapy. Patients with a CD20 expression level above the cut-off value treated with rituximab had a significantly longer overall survival than patients with a CD20 expression level below the cut-off value.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1352571The relationship between oncologists and their cancer patients is rapidly evolving. Oncologists and other cancer professionals master new anticancer and supportive treatment options, while working under increasing economic pressure and time constraints, and are often unprepared to deal with all the challenges of their new position in a therapeutic relationship with cancer patients and families. Good communication is as essential as are modern laboratory tests and sophisticated diagnostics to achieve the best clinical results. This book updates the evolution of truth-telling and communication patterns worldwide and offers insights into the recent trends and emerging challenges in communication with cancer patients and families. It is an invaluable resource to medical professionals, educators and patients in establishing a strong and effective partnership built on trust and mutual understanding.

COBISS.SI-ID: 260409856Thyroid carcinoma originating from follicular cells generally has an indolent character compared to most other human malignancies, but cases having certain characteristics are progressive and dire prognosis. Original research articles and review articles shed light on clinical, molecular, and pathological characteristics that are related to prognosis of patients with thyroid carcinoma in order to accurately discriminate high-risk patients from others. To perform appropriate surgical treatment and postoperative follow-up, evaluation of biological characteristics of each case is essential. There are three types of evaluations predicting prognosis of patients with thyroid carcinoma. Firstly, preoperative evaluation on imaging studies is important to decide the extent of surgery (thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection). For this purpose, ultrasonography is the most useful tool. Secondly, some clinical features are most suitable to evaluate based on intraoperative findings. Thirdly, it is well known and also new pathological and molecular features which significantly affect patients' prognoses.
