We investigated immunohistochemical expression of various markers on archival material of 72 patients with various types of Ewing's sarcoma using the tissue microarray method. Immunohistochemical results were compared with clinicopathological features using survival analysis. CD99 was detected in 90%, CD117 in 76%, bcl-2 in 70%, NSE in 67%, p53 in 67%, EMA in 26%, S-100 in 25%, TdT in 22%, and CK MNF116 in 10%. None of these had significant impact on survival. Patient age at the time of diagnosis and the presence of tumor necrosis were the only significant prognostic factors.

We analyzed morphological and immunocytochemical features in a series of 18 FNAB samples from histologically confirmed angiosarcomas. Our study shows that angiosarcoma is difficult to recognize on FNAB smears, especially when it lacks the dual cell population, and that it may mimick other, more common tumors. Although immunocytochemistry for CD31 and CD34 is helpful, it should be interpreted with caution, as its results are not completely specific.

We compared glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) activity, GLUD1 and GLUD2 expressions in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of untreated B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) in healthy individuals (HI) and patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM). The highest GLDH activity was found in PBMC of the B-CLL group followed by the HI group and IM group. Greater GLDH activity was also found in the CD19+ cell preparation of the B-CLL patients. GLUD1 expression was highest in the IM group, followed by the HI and B-CLL groups. GLUD2 expression was not significantly different between groups.

In a retrospective study we evaluated the sensitivity of qualitative and quantitative PCR essays for detection of the t(14;18) translocation on archival lymph node specimens from 50 patients with follicular lymphoma. Our study showed a good agreement between the two methods with a slightly higher detection rate of the quantitative method (47.4% vs. 43.9%).
