We studied 20 primary cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast for expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, androgen receptor, epidermal growth factor receptor, HER-2/neu, and topoisomerase II? using immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization methods. Epidermal growth factor receptor overexpression was detected in 13 cases (=65%). These tumors frequently over-express epidermal growth factor receptor, indicating a potential benefit from anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy for patients with advanced adenoid cystic carcinomas of the breast.

By multivariate logistic regression we analyzed which were predictive factors for thyroid cancer in 279 patients with Hürthle cell thyroid neoplasm. Independent predictive factors were age of patients () 65 years) and thyroglobulin levels ()1000 ng/mL). The latter finding makes it possible through simple and inexpensive laboratory test to predict more accurately whether a patient has a carcinoma or not, and it is easier to decide on the extent of surgical procedure. This enables reduction of the rate of unnecessary complications and repeated surgical procedures.

In a chapter of a contemporary textbook about diagnostic cytoipathology it is shown that in the hands of a well-trained team with good collaboration between paediatrician, radiologist and cytopathologist, fine needle aspiration (FNA) followed by cytological examination is a highly accurate approach for quickly rendering a preliminary or final diagnosis of childhoos tumours.

FNA samples from 18 histologically confirmed angiosarcomas obtained between 1985 and 2009 were included in the study. There were 13 primary angiosarcomas and five recurrent tumours; nine tumours were epithelioid. Cytomorphology did not correlate well with histology in mixed and spindle cell types of angiosarcomas. Angiosarcomas are difficult to recognize on FNA smears when they lack the typical dual, spindle and epithelioid cell population and when they occur in internal organs where carcinomas are more common.

In treatment of soft tissue tumors the knowledge of general soft tissue surgical pathology cannot be overemphasized. Prof. Živa pohar-Marinšek in a chapter of contemporary book Modern Soft Tissue Pathology state that all aspirates should be evaluated with the clinical and imaging data in mind. Cytopathologists, clinicians, and radiologists must work closely together to arrive at the best and most accurate diagnosis. Ancillary techniques, especially cytogenetics, should be employed whenever appropriate.
