University of Ljubljana, principal investigator B. Javornik, coordinated 7.FP project see.era.net.plus »Towards the preservation of autochthonous grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) varieties in West Balkan countries«. Project lasted two years and included partners from Srbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 7268473This was a closing lecture at the 6th congress of the Slovene Genetic Society by international participation. The lecture presented past achievements in studies of phytopathogenic fungus Verticillium albo-atrum and reasons to undertake whole genome sequnecing project in a total size of 200 Mbp. By sequencing genomes of V. albo-atrum isolates, we anticipated the dissection of the pathotype genomes, in order to provide an insight into their genomic structure, which might explain the increased virulence of the lethal strain, enable the detection of virulence-associated factors and elucidate pathogenicity in Verticillium spp. The project will also significantly contribute to the introduction of whole genome sequence analysis and development of bioinformatics tools for genomic comparative analysis.

COBISS.SI-ID: 7391097In 2010-2012 Branka Javornik participated in »Ad hoc technical expert group on risk assessment and risk management under the Cartagena protocol on biosafety« which was established by the decision of 4th meeting of COP-MOP, CBD Secretariat, Montreal, Canada. The expert group prepared guidance for the risk assessment of genetically modified organisms. Contribution "Respond or not to respond?" relates to one of the public discussions on genetically modified organisms.

COBISS.SI-ID: 7388537The new hop registered variety was bred for specific Savinjski golding aroma, increased yield and improved resistance to the most economically-important hop disease, Hop Downy Mildew. It is the first variety with integrated improved resistance to Verticillium wilt resistance. The brewing value of the new variety, which has been tested in the laboratories of the Institute and by Slovenian breweries, as well as reference microbreweries abroad, is highly similar to one of the finest hop aromas in the world, the Savinjski golding.
