The effect of sewage sludge on agricultural soils was examined. The amendment significantly increased N, P, K and Zn, Cu, Pb content in soils and affected bacterial and fungal structure.The effects were more pronounced and more long-term for bacterial than fungal communities. The mineralization of 14C-glyphosate was significantly higher in the sewage sludge treatment which can be linked to a higher glyphosate bioavailability in sewage sludge soil. Negative effects of potentially toxic substances present in the sewage sludge on soil microbial community functioning were not observed.

We successfully applied method of solidification/stabilisation (S/S) using Portland cement as a hydraulic binder for remediation of Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, As and Ni contaminated industrial soil. S/S enabled formation of solid soil monoliths (prevention of erosion). Equilibrium leaching and mass transfer of contaminants from S/S soil was reduced to the level, where use of /S/S material for land filling and covering is legally permitted.

Two models (WATBAL and BROOK90 ) for calculating the forest water balance were applied to different development stages of managed and nonmanaged forests in the Dinaric Karst for two hydrologically contrasting growing seasons. A disadvantage of the BROOK90 model is the greater need of input data. WATBAL, however, was useful for obtaining rougher estimates of the water balance components and can be applied to areas where there is less data available. Choice of model is therefore determined by data availability.

A two-year field study was conducted to determine the effect of the RFRRH system with impermeable and permeable polyethylene (PE) mulch on soil water content, crop yield and production cost effectiveness in purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea Moench) production. The results of the study in 2007 and 2008 showed that the system increases soil water content in dry periods at the beginning of plant growth, which can be one of the main reasons for higher yields in comparison to the control (uncovered ridges). Moreover, a system reduces also the labour costs.

The present study reports foliar contents of ascorbic acid, tocopherols, carotenoids, chlorophyll, flavonoids, phenolic acids and total phenolics in Oxalis acetosella L., and compares its nutritional value with some cultivated and wild plants. A comparison between O. acetosela with lettuce analysed in our study, and with numerous cultivated and wild edible plants from other studies, showed that O. acetosella is very rich in ß-carotene, ascorbic acid, tocopherols and xanthophylls, and that it is one of the best sources of flavonoids (flavonol glycosides and flavan-3-ols), especially rutin
