Strength training is an important tool for maintaining functional abilities into older age. Sarcopenia is among most important factors for muscle weakness in older age, as well as hanged muscle architecture and decreased muscle activation. With strength training it is possible to affect all of them. Next to hypertrophy, the exercise for older subjects should include explosive movements as well, since power is highly correlated with functional abilities of older subjects. Planning and execution of strength training is in older subjects principally the same as in younger adults, just progression is different.
F.18 Transfer of new know-how to direct users (seminars, fora, conferences)
COBISS.SI-ID: 4289457The project addresses the problem of movement of the elderly population by methods that represent a new approach both in Slovenia and in Europe, with an emphasis on strength training. Research shows that proper exercise significantly influences the physical abilities of older people. Strength training, which can significantly reduce the negative effects of the death of muscle cells in the deterioration of muscle activation and reduction of muscle mass is especially efficient in this regard. It is the most effective of all forms of exercise against osteoporosis. The project is developing modelled forms of exercise that can be easily adapted to different conditions of individual retirement homes.
