This monograph contains twelve studies on national teacher education systems (Finland, The Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Estonia, Poland, France, Czech Republic, Norway, Croatia, Romania and Slovenia). It belongs to comparative studies and it can be read in two ways: to search for commonalities and differences in a certain area or to regard every report as a case study in its own right, to see how a blend of tradition, given circumstances and context generates particular solutions. Solutions presented can be the source of ideas for policy makers and teacher educators.

COBISS.SI-ID: 254625024Students need to develop learning strategies in chemistry soon enough in order to be able to challenge more demanding concepts in chemistry as they progress along the educational vertical from elementary to secondary school and university. The GALC (Guided Active Learning in Chemistry) strategy adapted to the PROFILES (Professional Reflection Oriented Focus on Inquiry-based Learning and Education though Science) project philosophy is presented in this paper. When students use the GALC approach they learn new concepts and connections between them in the socio-scientific context in groups to emphasize the social context of learning. It is crucial to implement these strategies in Slovenian schools in the near future and to try to evaluate them in view of their contribution to the development of the students’ competences showing scientific (chemical) literacy and higher level of motivation for learning chemistry.
