The paper is the first part of a discussion on ethnological knowledge production between the 19th and 21st centuries, and the perspective on empirical reality and its scholarly conceptualization is primarily taken into account. The development of European ethnologies is largely the result of an ethnic/national paradigm. The correspondence between empirical reality and its scholarly conceptualizations is minimal, but ideologically acceptable and constitutive with regard to the discipline.

The dynamism of the genre system is presented from a synchronic viewpoint in an analysis of the relationship between literary folklore and literature, on the diachronic axis it is reflected in terminologization. Published sources show that terminology has been changing from the 16th century up to the present. Field terminology used in the collection Glasovi (Voices, 1988-2008) is presented. In conclusion, definitions of folklore genres are presented along with a reflection on their context.
