The First World War took not only the political elite by surprise, but also the rest of the population of Austria-Hungary who were unprepared for its length, course, cruelty and ultimately its conclusion. In anticipation of a brief and victorious war, the Austrian government had not planned for actuality. The consequences were terrible. Particularly in the third year of the war, famine was widespread throughout Slovenian territory, with children and the elderly numbering the greatest proportion of its victims. The authorities limited the food supply by introducing food ration cards, restricting the consumption of milk and sugar and by creating meatless days. In the final year of the war, the provisioning system collapsed completely, leaving the population to fend for themselves. Hunger led to personal crises and the collapse of moral values.

The three central chapeters adress the phenomenomn of context, that of texture and, finally the methodology of fieldwork. Special attention is given over to the steps of transcoding live situations into permanent (sound and video) records, phonetic transcriprios, and partial adaptation to the standard language. The process is marked by the loss of information in the respective transcoding phases.
