The book Urbanisation and construction of ethnic communities in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea is an urban anthropological monograph that explores rural-urban migrations to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and a construction of urban ethnic communities, called wantok systems. The research is partly based on historical analysis of internal migrations and urbanisation in Papua New Guinea during colonialism and after the state’s independence, as well as on an ethnographic study among the immigrants in the urban settlements (slums or shantytowns) in Port Moresby. Rural-urban migrations engendered inter-ethnic encounters, construction of new social forms, particularly urban ethnic communities, and correlated instrumentalisation of identities.
