The monograph discusses the problems arising from the contact of Slovenian Istria with the Trieste Gulf in a geographically holistic manner laying particular emphasis on natural conditions. The contact can be understood as a contact between land and see, i.e. the coast which is typical for specific states, processes and problems. It can also be understood as a confrontation of the maritime sphere (Mediterranean) with the continental one (Central-European, also Balkan). The Trieste Gulf and Slovenian Istria are often defined in geography as the contact and the transition from the Mediterranean to the Dinaric-karst type of landscape, with the interlacing features of both, which are often marked as sub-Mediterranean or moderately-Mediterranean features.

The paper is improving morphometric analysis of the karst slopes with the numerical modelling slope processes. The paper presents a simple one-dimensional physical model in which karst slope development can be estimated trough mass continuity of weathered mantle and mechanical and chemical weathering of bedrock. The approach represents the first step to understanding the complex interaction between the karst slope processes. Current literature on modelling of the karst slopes connects their development mainly to mass diffusion.

The actual use and stocks of economic, human, organizatorial, cultural, social and environmental capital had been analysed from the neo-endogenous development approach. Theory of regional economic cycles was tested on case tudy areas. The complex analysis in Goriška Brda region and Upper Savinja Valley notified that local community has network capacity, Suha Krajina is characterised by zone capacity, and in Brkini region a cellular capacity of endogenous potentials activation was recognized.

With respect to its economic and social indicators, Slovenia ranks among the medium-developed EU countries, but its environmental pressures per capita exceed the planetary acceptable level. The environmental potentials of Slovenia render possible augmentations in welfare and an increase in selfsufficiency, as well as concurrent reductions in ecological footprint. Changes in the field of energy are crucial: it would be necessary to reduce energy consumptions and to increase the proportionate utilization of renewable energy resources, with appropriately full environmental responsibility.

Geographical monograph is a complex study, which is theoretically and methodologically designed so that on the one hand, we follow the modern process of cultural landscape transformation, and on the other, in-depth analysis of potential for further development of the Lower Drava region. This scientific work is the result of 2 years of intensive research process in the region (Application Project) and extensive field research. We can talk about contemporary regional study, which will support the future regional development of the region.
