Publishing of scientific monographs of program members are one of the most important scientific achievements and outputs in year 2009. Environmental impacts of traffic and tourism are the first time published in scientific monograph in Slovenia. The rapid development of transport and tourism has brought about numerous direct and indirect environmental impacts. Tourism and traffic are intertwined and causally connected and important for ensuring the quality of contemporary life, therefore quantitative and qualitative analysis, field work and new methodological approaches are presented.

Author in the scientific paper deals with contemporary political map of the Balkans, funded on morphological, structural and functional analysis. There are frequent changes of political borders, the most of nation-states are relatively young, small-sized, ethnic heterogeneous and large peripheral areas are characteristic. The most of nations have two spatial-political units. All these nation-states are week and vulnerable and therefore represent a high latent crisis potential. On the other hand the transport, transit and strategic role of the Balkan area is increasing.

This research contributes to the identification of the situation and establishing the plans for further development of geoinformatic contents and competences offered in public education in Slovenia. It was carried out on the basis of guidelines designed at the meeting of geoinformatic experts in Madrid 2008. The research serves as pilot and model research of this kind, and is intended to be carried out also in other countries of EU. The outcomes of such national-level studies will contribute to the arguments needed in the striving for EU educational standards in the field of geoinformatics.

A society's ability to manage and exploit its developmental possibilities depends on knowledge about values of space and how they can be supported, protected and developed. The author is convinced that new methodologies for the teaching of space-related topics on different levels of geographical education across Europe should be found. Using the results of an international survey carried out in 5 EU countries possibilities for the development of geography teaching particularly with regard to the implementation of new ideas and approaches into the geography lesson are suggested.
