The conference took place in the framework of the international academic association STCS (Specific Topics of Chinese Studies) which has been established in 2010 by Jana Rošker and Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik. In 2011, they organized the second international STCS conference entitled “100 Years of Modern China” with over 60 participants from various European and Asian countries. There were 43 individual presentations (14 Slovenian scholars and 29 foreign experts). The conference which was held in cooperation with the Scientific Research Center of the Slovene Academy of Science and Art (ZRC SAZU) was dedicated to modern and contemporary China. It focused on the 100 years dating from the Xinhai Revolution which represents the end of the Chinese empire and the beginning of the republican China. The centennial is not only relevant in terms of state ideology, which represents the notional linkage of modern Chinese society, but also plays a significant role within the scientific and academic research, whose subject is Chinese society and culture. It likewise represents the symbolical and concrete linkage between tradition and modernity, progress and conservatism, the traditional values and demands for adjustment to paradigms of the contemporary societies in the globalized world.
